The Lenca of Honduras
The Lenca people are the largest indigenous people group in Honduras. The reside in the western mountains of Honduras and occupy more than 200 villages. There are between 100,000 – 115,000 Lenca residing in Honduras today. Here are a few interesting facts about the Lenca:
- Most are subsistence level farmers, who’s main crops are corn, beans and coffee
- As a whole, the Lenca are the poorest people group in Honduras
- The majority of the over 200 Lenca villages have no evangelical church
- Poverty, alcoholism, malnutrition and fear of divine chastisement are common
